Mahahual
We have come to Mahahual for the Easter weekend because it is a quiet place but on arrival in the town which is tiny there were hundreds of cruise ship people crowding the streets. I believe it was a small fishing village before the cruises started coming here. It is now a zoo when the cruises are here and a ghost town when they are not. Totally geared towards the massive tourist industry. Massages on the beach and kitschy shops on the one boardwalk, hundreds of taxis trying to pick up and drop off at the boat or at the town.
In the distance here at Mahahual you can see the cruise boat docked at Costa Mayan. Below the circus on the beach. I think it appeals to some but not us. We went 20 kilometers up the coast to a little hotel with cabanas on the sea where we are isolated but it is calm.
This below is where we are and the snorkling demands swimming out a bit to the reef but we have seen lots of fish, a torpedo ray and a moray eel. The water is fine and there is not too much of the Sargasso grasses yet but they will be piling up as April is upon us. It is really not so different from the Poseidonie in the Med.
They go out fishing and a few days ago they brought back 40 lobster. Yesterday they brought back a big baracuda. They don't have any stores around here so they do sell it in the restaurant to the diners. It is caught free diving.
The guy that is the owner is a designer and he worked in France on design which is evident in how he has decorated the place. His father owned it but after the 2007 Hurricaine Dean came through and destroyed most everything we abandoned it. The son, the designer took it over in 2017 and has been working it since. He uses a lot of different typeface and some invented and reused sayings.
The roof top has a great little terrace where we can have a beer and watch the sunset. We have met some dutch people here. Two women who are traveling with a small boy. He runs around naked on the beach having fun and picking up shells. Reminds me of the time we went with Cyril when he was 1 and a half to Baja and stayed camping on the beach for 3 weeks eating fish and tortillas. Playing with fonts.
