Tulum and Cenote Dive

This our last day in Mexico and we haven’t been on one dive so we decided to do a cave dive into the Dos Ojos Cenote outside of Tulum.  This little fellow was in the parking lot watching the happenings.

The water in the cenote is crystal clear. The light streams down through the holes in the ceilings with stalactites and beautiful rock formations.
This is the mouth of the cave and we were scheduled to do 3 dives, one into the Barbie cave and the next into the Bat cave. This cave system is enormous and continued for a hundred miles underground.
The Barbie cave is so called because there is a toy crocodile at the half way point with a barbie in its jaws.  It was my favorite because we were there early and nobody else was there. The dive circled around the cenote and you could always see a little blue light from the outside shining.

 The bat cave dive went into total obscurity and our flashlights were the only light around. Sometimes a tiny fish would pass in front of the flash light and its shadow on the cave wall would be as big as a shark but in reality it was only an inch long. Our guide Mariano was great and described the dive beforehand and he was very conscious of safety.

Tomorrow we fly out from Cancun to Chicago then on to Munich and then Nice.

Our plan was to head from Mexico City to the coast of Yucatan.  It is a lot of bus hours on rocky roads and from Palenque we had a 6 hour ride to Xpujil which is halfway to the coast and has some nice biosphere parks and mayan ruins.  We had reserved a room in a nice place, it was a cabana with all amenities.  But the problem was we were arriving late at night, 11:30 so the hotel gave us instructions on how to get there.  Well on arrival at the bus station it was a crazy mess of people leaving for the vacations of the "Semana Sainte"  and it was festive.  I couldn't roll my suitcase because of the beer cans on the ground.  We didn't see a taxi anywhere until we went down the street and found a taxi stand.  It worked well and Yves was able to flag down a taxi.  But when we arrived at the location the instructions the hotel gave were not correct and we couldn't find our cabana.  We were at wits end so decided to try to find another hotel r...

The Layers of Mexico City

This is a wall of torn posters that has left layers of colors and words.  I've been taking photos of walls like this, they look like paintings.  The walls have many layers just like this city.  This is a reminder that the Virgin of Guadeloupe was is from this city and venerated. A baptismal font in the Cathedral This is one of the many eloquent and massively decorated chapels in the public Cathedral at the colonial center.  Before the Colonial era there was the Aztec era and as you know they built their city on a lake so when Spain took over it built on the ruins of the Aztec buildings.  This was a problem as the mud and water caused the foundations of these edifices in the historic city to settle and shift.  The pendelum in the photo below shows how the sinking foundations has caused shifting.  All the colonial buildings in the old town have the same problem and buildings that are cracked and unsteady are brought down by the earthquakes that are frequ...

Natural lights

This morning we finally got a tour of the Casa Gilardi.  This is his, Luis Barragan's last work done in the 70s and was constructed at the time he had a show at the MOMA in New York. Warning: there are lots of photos here it is like candy for a color and light fanatic. Constructed on a small street it is on a lot between two other houses.  Architects seem to do there best work when they are restrained by space. When you walk into the house you are in a small room with indiret light and when you open the door to the next room the light is a golden from the windows that are aligned in the wall.  Very beautiful effect. Moving from one room to the next you are welcomed by a new light experience that is ephemeral and all created by natural light coming in through windows or reflecting off of the water in the pool.
